Question:
There are X's in the exported text in the demo version. Does this also happen in the full version?

Answer: The demo version adds random Xs to the exported text. This no longer occurs in the full version of the PdfGrabber. If you have already purchased a license for the full version of the software, and the Xs still appear, ensure that you have activated the software with the license data. The demo version also places a stamp on graphics; this is also no longer the case with the full version. You can order the full version of the PdfGrabber from our shop or contact your software dealer.

Question: Can the PdfGrabber also be remotely controlled by command line parameters or Com-Interface?

Answer: PdfGrabber offers the following command line parameters with the Professional Version:

/LANGID 1031 (German)
/LANGID 1033 (English)
/LANGID 1036 (French)
/LANGID 3082 (Spanish)

/profile [profilename] [filename] (processes the specified file using the profile selected)

/[filename] (processes the specified file using the profile last selected or the current profile)

/SILENT or /S (processes the specified file in silent mode. The PdfGrabber exports the files in the background and is then subsequently closed).

/show (opens the exported documents once the export process has been successfully completed)

/pages ["Page range"] (exports the specified pages/page ranges, e.g. /pages "1,3-5;12")

/pass ["password"] (allows a password to be entered provided this is necessary to open or export a PDF file)

You can also test the parameters with the demo version, e.g. simply enter c:\Program\PdfGrabber\PdfGrabber.exe /profile [profilename] [filename] in the input window. You can replace [profilename] with the profile name of your choice (possibly in ""), and [filename] with the document to be exported (path + name).

Furthermore, the PdfGrabber also offers control functions via the COM-Interface. The COM interface definition is in PdfGrabber.exe and can be integrated into your development environment via a type libraries import.
These functions are not available in the Standard version, the user must therefore have a Professional version license.

You can also use the "Monitored Folder" function with all versions in order to control the PdfGrabber through an external application. For each profile you can define a folder which is monitored by PdfGrabber. As soon as a new file is saved to this folder, the export process is launched and the file is then saved to the output directory which you specify. You can specify the parameters for this function under profile options.

Question: I want to export a PDF file into RTF/Word format. What is the quickest way of doing this?

Answer: To export your PDF files as a RTF/Word file, proceed as follows:

1. Start up the PdfGrabber and select the desired output format in the upper section of the window. The software offers a number of different output formats which satisfy different requirements. To achieve your goal, select the format 'Word/RTF – Text box-layout'. All of the settings that are necessary for the most detailed possible export into RTF/Word format are preselected here.

2. In the middle section of the window select the relevant 'Source Document'. In order to add a document to the list, press the 'Add' button. Select the required PDF file from the subsequent file dialog.

3. Next press the 'Start' button to begin the export process. During export, a message window appears showing the latest status information.

4. Once the export process is complete, the exported Word document is opened in Microsoft Word, provided that this program is installed on your computer.

NOTE: Please note that the export time depends on the size of the document and the type of the PDF document. PDF documents that contain numerous images usually require a longer export time.

Question: Is it possible to place separate pages on one single sheet in Microsoft Excel, instead of multiple sheets?

Answer: PdfGrabber 3.0 comes with support for exporting to a single Microsft Excel sheet.

Question: I would like to forward a file generated via the RTF/Word export function, but the file is not displayed on the target PC or in the wrong font. What must I do?

Answer: If the PC receiving the document displays it incorrectly, this is usually due to missing fonts on the target PC. To solve the problem, activate the "Embed TrueType fonts" option in "Profile -- Edit -- Format -- Rich text format options". Be aware that this option will increase the size of the file.

Question: Although the software's interface is in English, the help file is in German. Is this a "packaging" mistake?

Answer: Please update your installation to the latest version. The update will contain English help files, too.

Question: Testing PdfGrabber with a huge document I received the following memory error: "Error in generating thread. Not enough storage to proceed this command.". What can I do?

Answer: Huge amounts of resources are required to export very large PDF documents. For example, although images in the PDF document are compressed and therefore relatively small, they have to be decompressed before they can be exported. One high-resolution image can easily take up 50 MB or more which can lead to lengthy processing times where there are a lot of images or for large documents.

The following options are available to solve this problem:

a) Make sure your system has sufficient storage space.

b) Deactivate the export options "Images" and "Export lines as graphic" under "Format" in export settings in order not to export any graphic images and to keep file sizes smaller.

c) Export the document in stages (pages 1 - 100, pages 101 - 200, etc.). You can set the page ranges you require in the main window.

Question: I tried to export a scan based document. The result included only a graphic file but no text. Is this correct?

Answer: For scan based documents you need an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) engine because what you see in the PDF is not text, but a graphic image (picture).

PdfGrabber 3.0 supports the Microsoft Office Document Imaging feature that comes with Microsoft Office 2003. To use this feature make sure that Office 2003 or higher is installed to your system and activate the PdfGrabber feature 'Options -- Settings -- OCR'.

Question: The PdfGraber interface language is German. Do you offer an English version to?

Answer: PdfGrabber is available in English and German. If you downloaded the German version choose 'Optionen -- Sprache -- English' from the main menu to switch the interface language to English. Note that the help files are available in German only at the moment. The English help files are in development.

Question: Can I create PDF files with the PdfGrabber?

Answer: Standard and Professional version 3.0 are coming with a PDF printer with which PDF documents can be created from any application using a printer driver. The required PDFs can be exported, the necessary changes made and the file then subsequently saved again as a PDF.

Note: This feature is available with Microsoft Windows 2000 or higher

Question: After using the RTF/Word export function, I can only see a "Section change" in Word and the document is otherwise empty. What must I do?

Answer: If you open the exported documents with Microsoft Word, make sure that you have selected the "Page layout" or "Online layout" mode under "View". The phenomenon described can occur in "Normal" mode.

Question: There are too many or too few columns in the Excel export. What must I do?

Answer: The "output quality" can be defined in Excel's format options. This sliding scale can be used to choose between "exact (many columns)" and "easy to edit (few columns). The setting should be made or adjusted to suit each new PDF document. It is recommended to start the export with a mid-range setting. If the Excel file output has too many columns, you should select a higher setting (move slide to the right). If there are not enough columns, select a lower setting (move slide to the left). If necessary, conduct several test runs in order to obtain the best setting for each particular document.

Question: How can I fill in exported forms in Word?

Answer: Since no form elements are created during conversion, it may be necessary to create the text to be filled in using text fields. These text fields are simply placed in the desired position in the exported Word file.
To insert a text field, select the menu command 'Insert – Text Field' in Word and then form a square in the desired position using the mouse. Once the text has been entered, the text field should then be formatted. To do this, double click on the edge of the field and under the tab 'Lines and Borders' set the 'Color' to 'No filling' under 'Fill'. Repeat this under 'Line'.
